La Kitchenette Souris: Eggnog

This yummy & simple recipe comes from the "The Little House Cookbook", which is indeed full of recipes from the "Little House on the Prairie" books!

I have only made a few, but this one will always be on the favorites list!

Eggnog was talked about in "Farmer Boy", if you wish to try to find the original reference.

Eggnog

6 Eggs, separated
1/2 cup sugar
4 cups (1 quart) milk
2 cups heavy cream (whipping cream)
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly ground is even better)

Beat the egg yolks and sugar in the bowl until thoroughly blended.
Slowly beat in the milk, then stir in the cream.
Refrigerate this mixture while you beat the egg whites on the platter until they stick to it and form soft peaks.
Pour the cold egg-milk mixture into a punch bowl and scrape the egg whits onto the surface, blending some in with a few deep strokes of the spoon.
Sprinkle the nutmeg over the foamy surface and carefully dip into cups so as not to disturb the foam.

I like to put mine in fancy cups (seen in the photo above), and carefully put a little foam on top, then sprinkle the nutmeg on.

The nutmeg is essential because it prevents stomach ache from such a rich drink!

Paper straws are a really nice, old fashioned touch.

Eggnog goes really well with a coffee cake or gingerbread anything.
